The Excellence behind the symbol
The name “Adinkra” in Adinkra Black is derived from an ancient codex called Adinkra symbols which were developed by the Akan people of Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire in the early 1800s. In fact the oldest surviving Adinkra cloth, also known as a kente cloth, was made in 1817 and has been kept at the British Museum since 1818. These symbols can convey letters, words, and even whole Ideas by themselves. The name comes from Nana Kwadwo Agyemang Adinkra, the king of Gyaman, a former kingdom in modern-day Côte d'Ivoire. They used to only be used by spiritual leaders and royalty, and where only utilized for important ceremonies such as funerals. Adinkra means goodbye. The particular Adinkra symbol we use as the symbol for the Adinkra Black Series means “God is King” or can be taken as a recognition to a higher principle.
